Jim Hunter’s paintings are based on his experience of particular landscapes and his work for ‘Into The Woods’ began by making paintings and drawings outdoors, in the woods, using watercolour and ink in his sketchbooks. These direct responses act as prompts for him to experiment with abstract images which become expressive in intent and not necessarily descriptive. As he develops these responses in his studio the process of making the paintings adds to their potential meaning. He works mainly with water-based media on paper and he often incorporates collage and elements of pasted paper into the paintings as this allows him to make rapid changes to the imagery.
